History of the Club

In 1947, a small group of German Shepherd Dog enthusiasts met in Nottingham and amongst them were former members Mr Sid Greaves and Mr Phil Duffy.  The outcome of their meeting was the formation of the Midlands Counties Alsatian Club, which was registered with The Kennel Club on  1st January 1948.

Later the same year, unofficial Branches at Mansfield and Derby were founded so the title of the Club was changed, and on 20th April 1948 the Midland Counties Alsatian Association was re-registered with The Kennel Club.

The aims of the Association were formulated then and have survived, unaltered, to the present day namely, “To bring together all Alsatian enthusiasts into one united body within the Midland Counties, for the betterment of the breed.  To instruct members in ringcraft, obedience, and workability, so that this highly intelligent animal takes its rightful place in the dog world.”

On 1st January 1951, the three Branches of Derby, Nottingham and Mansfield became Registered in their own right with The Kennel Club.  Membership fees were 7/6 (37.5p) for a single member and 10/- (50p) for a Joint Membership.  When inflation is taken into account, today’s annual subscription is very favourable at a standard £12.00 per annum.

Rivalry between the Branches was keen but good natured and the inter-Branch rallies that were arranged at the time served as a focus for this rivalry.  Unfortunately, we have seen the closure of the Nottingham and Mansfield Branches, but the Derby Branch (Obedience Training) continues to thrive, and the Working Trials section still hosts events during the competition season.
