Core Code of Ethics

All Members of the Midland Counties German Shepherd Dog Association undertake to abide by its general Code of Ethics.

All Members agree to abide by this Code of Ethics and acknowledge that they may be referred to in any complaint or disciplinary discussion.
  • All training will be carried out using only positive, force free techniques and methods and positive punishment will not be used.

  • No aversive such as a prong collar, pinch collar, e-collar etc. shall be used or promoted by Members of MCGSDA.

  • Properly house, feed, water and exercise all dogs under their care and arrange for appropriate veterinary attention if and when required.

  • Maintain a professional, positive approach to any dogs owned by them or that are in their care.

  • Agree without reservation that any veterinary surgeon who performs an operation on any of their dogs which alters the natural conformation of the animal, or who carries out a caesarean section on a bitch, may report such operations to the Kennel Club.

  • Agree that no health puppy will be culled. Puppies which may not conform to the Breed Standard should always be placed in suitable homes.

  • Abide by all aspects of the Animal Welfare Act and The Control of Dangerous Dogs Act.

  • Will not create demand for, nor supply, puppies that have been docked illegally.

  • Agree not to breed from a dog or a bitch which could be in any way harmful to the dog or to the breed.

  • Will not allow any of their dogs to roam at large or to cause a nuisance to neighbours or those carrying out official duties.

  • Ensure that their dogs are microchipped and wear properly tagged collars and will be kept leashed or under effective control when away from home.

  • Ensure that their dogs are fully vaccinated and vaccinations are kept up to date.

  • Clean up after their dogs in public places or anywhere their dogs are being exhibited.

  • Only sell dogs where there is a reasonable expectation of a happy and healthy life and will help with the re-homing of a dog if the initial circumstances change.

  • Supply written details of all dietary requirements and give guidance concerning responsible ownership when placing dogs in a new home.

  • Ensure that all relevant Kennel Club documents are provided to the new owner when selling or transferring a dog, and will agree, in writing, to forward any relevant documents at the earliest opportunity, if not immediately available.

  • Will not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers or directly or indirectly allow dogs to be given as a prize or donation in a competition of any kind.  Will not sell by sale or auction Kennel Club registration certificates as stand-alone items (not accompanying a dog).

  • Will not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed nor falsely advertise dogs or mislead any person regarding the health or quality of a dog.

  • Instructors will work with dogs and their Handlers with honesty, respect, and integrity and always in the best interest of the dogs welfare.

  • Instructors will work within their professional limits and will refer Handlers and their dogs to other suitable, relevant professionals e.g. Veterinary Surgeons, should the need arise.

  • Instructors will refrain from giving advice or acting in a way that would knowingly cause any harm, distress, damage or injury to any dog or their Handler.

  • Instructors shall conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.  They will not act in any way that is likely to negatively affect, harm, or discredit the reputation of MCGSDA.

  • Any personal opinions and/or unsubstantiated theories expressed by Instructors and/or Members should be stated as such.

Breach of these provisions may result in expulsion from Club Membership, and/or disciplinary action by the Kennel Club and/or reporting to the relevant Authorities for legal action, as appropriate.

MCGSDA may amend this Code of Ethics at any point and any amendments will be communicated to all Members.
